THE RHETORIC OF PROGRESS HAS OFTEN BEEN WEAPONISED BY HEGEMONIC POWERS TO SECURE THEIR WINNING THRONE IN THIS HELLA RIGGED DICK-MEASURING CONTEST CALLED “WHO IS THE SUPERIOR CIVILISATION"

when western colonial dickheads came to southeast asia, they were both disgusted and fascinated by sexualities and genders beyond their comprehension. this strange combination of reactions formed both the basis for their orientalist fetishisation of southeast asian peoples, and their justification to civilise the "primitive, transgressive other" through colonial projects that institutionalised heteronormativity and persecutions against homosexual activity a.k.a. "carnal intercourse against the order of nature." their introduction of homophobia / transphobia was an act of colonial conquest framed as generous charity to modernise and thus supposedly better our peoples.

TODAY, THE TABLES HAVE TURNED - THE LIBERAL WEST NOW FLAUNTS ITS SUPPOSED FREEDOMS FOR QUEER PEOPLES VIA RAINBOW-FICATIONS OF CORPORATE LOGOS AND OTHER PINK CAPITALIST SLOGANS (well, at least every month of June) AS A SIGN OF PROGRESS IN CONTRA-DISTINCTION TO CONSERVATIVE NON-WESTERN NATIONS WHO STILL DO NOT GRANT BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS TO QUEER PEOPLES.

THE RIGHT FOR QUEER PEOPLES TO EXIST AND ACCESS BASIC HUMAN NEEDS IS NOW DUBBED AS PROGRESSIVE AND MODERN BY THE WEST, IMPLYING THE REGRESSIVENESS OF NON-WESTERN STATES THAT CONTINUE TO RETAIN HOMOPHOBIC AND TRANSPHOBIC LAWS FORMERLY INTRODUCED BY THEIR COLONIAL IMPERIALISTS, NOW EMBRACED BY THE POSTCOLONIAL ELITE UNDER THE GUISE OF PROTECTING 'TRADITIONAL' VALUES -- AGAIN, AN INHERITED SELF-ORIENTALISING IMAGINATION OF THEIR CULTURAL IDENTITY.
