PROCESS DOCUMENTATION:

Environment - From reference to concept art
The last aquarium I visited before the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread worldwide, was the Berlin Aquarium in Germany. I was enamoured by the blue hues of the surroundings and the way the refracted light danced across the walls and floors of the architecture—something I often enjoy about the interior atmosphere of aquariums. I took many photos of these moments with my phone camera while I was there, which ultimately became the main reference material for aquarium visit.

Artistic direction - Stylistic inspiration and process

One of my favourite activities during aquarium visits is sitting down in front a glass tank for hours, live-sketching underwater landscapes and trying to capture the iridiscent colours cast by the lights above the water surface. I grew particularly fond of using colour pencils and inks to articulate the textures and chromatic gradients of the scenery. Inspired by Shishi Yamazaki’s painterly treatment of rotoscope animation, I applied a similar “analogue” approach using Kyle T’s Megapack Brush Set for Photoshop during the animation process.

Composition - Curating 2D assets in a 3D world

Having admired the implementation of 2.5D art styles in D-CELL GAMES’ rhythm-adventure game UNBEATABLE and AATOAA’s interactive animation Way To Go, I wanted to try my hand at this hybrid art practice myself in aquarium visit. I created all my 2D sprites in Procreate, 3D-modelled the aquarium set in Blender, and finally composed them altogether in Unity.
